Sex-positivity is a movement that recognizes sexuality (including asexuality and aromatic) as being an important and healthy aspect of the self, across a lifespan, and that sexuality is incredibly and beautifully diverse. Sex-positivity works to remove fear and shame clouding sexuality and instead utilizes non-judgmental, open communication, with the focus on pleasure, in a way that is meaningful for the person/s being considered.
As an offering to my community and to support my sexuality educator training, I recently considered offering a sexuality education group for families to supplement what children might not be getting at school (and even what the adults might be uneducated or uncomfortable with). Not all schools offer sexuality education, and some states are not required to present medically accurate info (see State Policies on Sex Education in Schools (ncsl.org). Further, what and how material is presented might be dated and not best practice. For example, many school-based sexual health curricula and application still separate genders; this is problematic as it 1) ignores children that are gender variant or non-conforming, 2) perpetuates shame and ignorance between the genders, and 3) is more about the parent and educator’s discomfort than it is about the needs of children.
When I asked friends and supportive families I knew about my sexuality education offering for families, they struggled with my approach (and I am thankful they did and for their honesty). They wanted to modify and adapt the content of my potential classes to their child’s needs. So, that is where this offering was born, from concern and resistance of some of my dearest parent friends.
This sex-positivity group is meant to provide sex positive and specific educational content for parents and allow parents to interact and discuss topics and concerns. We meet once a month with a set topic, HYBRID (in-person and zoom) for about 60 minutes. Participants are asked to pay what they can, sliding scale (tier 1=$15, 2=$10, 3=$5 via venmo @ignitewellbeing). Register by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org Through email, participants will be asked about their current questions, be provided a waiver to complete, and be oriented to the format and zoom information.
Please see the events and summary page of the website, FB, and/or meetup for the latest dates and times of events. Also, please watch for a workshop on sex-positive parenting later this summer (anticipated in August 2021).
If you are unable to make our meetings, please check out Sex Positive Families – their website and book are incredible Home – Sex Positive Families
