Soft tissue mobilization is the term used by physical therapist (perhaps by other professionals as well) to describe manual therapy techniques that are focused on skin, muscle, ligaments, and/or fascia for the purposes of pain alleviation, myofascial trigger point release, soft tissue mobility (hence the name), scar tissue or adhesion management, range of motion improvement, muscle recruitment/facilitation, among other indications.
Soft tissue mobilization is not massage, as “massage” is only performed by massage therapists.
